The Blind /1986
For The Blind Sophie Calle photographed people who are blind and asked them what their image of beauty was.
"Fish fascinates me, I can't say why. They don't make any noise. they are nothing. I don't really care about them. It's their evolution in the water that pleases me, the idea that they are not attached to anything. I sometimes find myself standing for minutes at one time in front of an aquarium. Standing like an imbecile. It's beautiful, that's all.”
"Beauty - I've buried beauty. I don't need beauty. I don't need images in my brain. Since I cannot appreciate beauty, I have always run away from it.”
The last Image /2010
She met people, most of whom had lost their sight suddenly. She asked them to describe the last thing they saw. She made visual image based on their answer.
See the Sea /2011
She went to Istanbul, a city surrounded by water. She met people who had never seen the sea. She filmed their first time to see the sea.
They felt deeply, sound of the wave, smell, and comprised of the color of the sky and the sea. They found out that—the video caught their expression clearly. what kind of sea did they see? It’s not same as me for sure. Even we share time and space, we don't have the same view and always there is a subtle difference.
The theme of her art work, extremely personal and is intimate choice of subject which clearly contrast to ——- great artists often take action to universal theme such as human life and death, memory of the whole human life.talking with strangers, Memory with full of sentiment, The story with the lover—-They are displayed in combination with art objects to prove the memory by photograph and text. One model of the stance for her artwork is that we relive the personal experience of herself. The fact that mixed up the lies and the truth, we accept the things as ‘ trifling thing’ that is the first step to face with her art work pleasantly. In fact, most of her photographs—shown in her work is retaken (that is rediscovery or reconstitution from her memory) She put many photographs to prove her story is that evidence photograph, but a stark lie. Relieving her experience is the typical method for her art work, but 「The Blind」its concept and practice were totally opposite way for her previous method. The image rebuilt with ‘the word’ of blind people, This is her only work, but the process to get this—-She depends on herself to relive for ‘the word’ based on the imagination of blind people.Sight isn’t required for sense and feeling such as favourable, comfortable, loving—-It may be said that touching comfort is beautiful. However, think of ‘image of beauty’, it is visual images and will be something like one piece of picture and photograph.
Stitch— It can be used in many ways and change the format well, and it might dominate the foreground. It become one crowd body when stitch it up finely, when greatly, It gives us a strong image.
Fabric art —-it mixes with air and light filling space, and that will bring about new effect. Thread and thread—- even not thread, They perform a function to connect a things. I have a strong image about ‘connection’ for the technique. It is often used as metaphorical expression and it can express well the intention artists themselves. —-Color effect of the light, quality of the material
Sewing - embroidery, Recycling - new fabric from old, Hand and machine embroidery
Dialogue from DNA /2004
Shirota Chiharu is a Japanese artist based in Germany. Inspired by herself
A red thread expanded radially from one point of the wall and was connected to the innumerable old shoes with comment by owner. It lets me feel emotions and is slightly weird.
"It would be nice to banish every trace of myself, my looks, my papers, my passport, and even my fingerprints," Shiota has said, "and only create my works in dialogue with the cosmos.”
I have an image that very hard to me to deal with using leather for huge material. On the other hand, It become the different impression when I think of it as skin. I could change a viewpoint if I hesitate about looking to it. If I approach to near and looking to the detailed space, It becomes interesting again. There is not the identical design become the leather surface is changed by conditions such as density and thickness of the fiber, a direction, focalisation and entanglement.
